Commentary

William Rau worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad before becoming the official photographer for the Lehigh Valley Railroad in 1895. Capturing feats of engineering amid breathtaking views, his celebratory photographs were widely exhibited in hotel lobbies and railroad terminals, used as advertisements in newspapers, and reproduced as postcards. Retaining the copyright to his images, he also sold them through his studio and showed them in salon exhibitions.
